RPS issues statement regarding its
 K-3 elementary leveling plan

Several Richmond City elementary schools throughout the district are currently undergoing a leveling process in an effort to meet the instructional needs of students and criteria set forth by the K-3 Primary Class Size Reduction program. Leveling, also referred to as needs-based scheduling, is a process which involves adjusting the number of teachers to meet enrollment needs across the district. Additionally, per state guidelines, each school that is allocated funds through the K-3 Primary Class Size Reduction program must meet the maximum class size and pupil-teacher ratio requirements.

On Monday, November 2, Richmond Public Schools (RPS) will reassign nine teachers as follows:

  • Miles Jones Elementary School - 6
  • Carver Elementary School - 2
  • Ginter Park Elementary School- 1

The reassignment of teachers is based on the schools with the greatest need. As always, staffing decisions made by RPS leadership will be made with student needs in mind. We must balance leveling decisions that affect individual schools against the larger responsibilities associated with leading a large school district. Additionally, this plan of action will aid the district in closing the $430K budgetary gap while also meeting instructional needs of students.

Parents of students who will be impacted by these changes can expect to receive written communication from their child’s school. While we understand that this transition is less than ideal for students and staff, we will continue to support the impacted classrooms and schools during this period to ensure minimal disruption and an optimal learning environment. We are committed to being a responsible, engaged partner in the educational experience of all students.
